How petroleum became Norway`s main income
14th of July 1972, this was the day that changed Norway`s future, making it one of the richest countries in the world, after Monaco. On this day the government decided to form a national petroleum
fund, which turned out to be a huge success leaving Norway with a great amount of money. The industry is led by a numerous companies but, the biggest one is called "Statoil ".
For several years Norway has been ranked as one of the best places to live in placing within the top five each year. This is mostly due to our wealth, coming from the petroleum industry.
But, with money comes problems and we have experienced this throughout our participation in the industry.
It is incredibly dangerous to work at the platform in which they produce the oil. During the production hazardous chemicals are released in the water. We have also seen multiple examples of ships leaking oil causing hundreds of animals too die, and angry beach house owners not being able to swim near the coast.

Is it worth it?
This is a central question in the industry as well as in our society.
Fishing is also one of Norway`s big resources, oil can make a huge impact on the fishing industry by leakage. The Northern nature is also very sensitive to pollution. On the other hand the industry earns billions of krone's (Norwegian currency) to our country each year. Which is why this is such a huge dilemma. The amount of money in the oil fund fluctuates. But we do know that there is enough money in the fund to hand out a million Norwegian krones to each citizen in the country (128 684 USD).

The final question
What are we going to do when the oil runs out?
Sooner or later the oil will run out. And the question is hanging down dangling in front of our faces with us having no idea what to do. Several scientists are working to solving the problem. Since this is such a gigantic topic here is a short video that touch bases on more important questions about the Petroleum and gas industry :
